Trafford began his career with Carlisle United, signing with Manchester City as an U12. He has featured regularly for England youth teams, working his way through the age groups, and received his first call up to the England U21 squad in May 2022.
He moved on loan to Accrington Stanley, before joining Bolton Wanderers until the end of the 2021–22 season. He kept four clean sheets in his first four games, which the first time a new Bolton goalkeeper had done so in the club's history.
On 1 July 2022, Trafford re-joined the club on loan for a further season.
